India-Panama Ties Set for New Flight, Partnership Expands from Trade to Digital Cooperation

Bilateral Relations Reach New Heights

India and Panama have taken a significant step towards elevating their bilateral relations to new heights. A high-level meeting in New Delhi between External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Panama's Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez saw detailed discussions on further strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, maritime affairs, health, agriculture, education, digital technology, and multilateral forums.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to transforming relations into a comprehensive, pragmatic, and long-term strategic partnership. Welcoming the Panamanian Foreign Minister, who is on a five-day visit to India, Dr. Jaishankar stated that India views Panama as a crucial gateway to the Latin America and Caribbean region. He highlighted Panama's strategic geographical location, robust economic base, and global logistics network as being of particular importance to India.

Strategic Partnership Commitment

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Dr. Jaishankar stated in his opening address that the governments and leadership of both India and Panama are fully committed to deepening and broadening their bilateral partnership. He expressed India's desire for closer and stronger ties with Panama, citing its strategic significance and immense potential for economic stability and growth.

He specifically mentioned the Panama Canal as an excellent example of global logistics and maritime trade, noting that Panama's modern transportation and logistics infrastructure serves as a model for the entire world. Cooperation with Panama will become increasingly vital for a rapidly emerging global economic power like India.

Panama's Role in 'Developed India' Goal

Dr. Jaishankar added that India is rapidly progressing towards its goal of achieving 'Developed India' by 2047. In this context, expanding economic and strategic relations with the Latin America and Caribbean region is a key priority of India's foreign policy, with Panama playing a very important role.

Cooperation in Trade, Health, Agriculture, and Digital Sectors

During the talks, both countries extensively discussed possibilities for enhancing trade and investment, developing ports and maritime connectivity, fostering partnerships in health services, agricultural research, and education, as well as boosting cooperation in digital technology and innovation. Both sides agreed that mutual cooperation will impart new strength to the economies of both nations and their global partnership.

Shared Commitment Against Terrorism

The External Affairs Minister also lauded the cooperation between India and Panama on international platforms, including the United Nations. He expressed gratitude to the Panamanian government for supporting India's right to self-defense following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam last year and for unequivocally condemning terrorism in all its forms. He emphasized that global cooperation and shared commitment against terrorism are more essential today than ever before.

New Direction for Relations

Experts believe that this high-level meeting will provide a new direction to the economic, strategic, and diplomatic relations between India and Panama, and will also strengthen India's presence and influence in the Latin America and Caribbean region.
