India has taken a major leap toward developing hypersonic missile capability after the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a ground test of an advanced scramjet engine, officials confirmed. The achievement places India among a select group of nations working on next-generation, ultra-high-speed weapon systems.
What was tested and why it matters
The test involved a scramjet combustion system, a technology essential for sustained hypersonic flight at speeds above Mach 5, or more than six times the speed of sound. Unlike conventional engines, scramjets use atmospheric oxygen for combustion, enabling long-duration high-speed travel.
