India Launches Groundbreaking Study on Diabetes and Brain Health

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, researchers have launched an international collaboration to investigate how diabetes impacts brain health, potentially leading to cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

The project brings together the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), Chennai, the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI). Scientists aim to identify early markers of brain ageing in people with diabetes by integrating clinical assessments, neuroimaging, genomic, and proteomic data.


Diabetes and Dementia: A Two-Way Connection

Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman of MDRF, highlighted that diabetes is associated with earlier onset and faster progression of dementia. “This study could reveal whether strict blood sugar control can reverse certain brain changes. Detecting biochemical markers decades before symptoms appear may enable earlier intervention,” he said.

Evidence increasingly suggests that diabetes not only elevates the risk of stroke and vascular complications but also accelerates neurodegeneration. Dr. Mohan noted that diabetic individuals have roughly twice the incidence of dementia compared with non-diabetic peers.

He also emphasized the bidirectional relationship: cognitive decline can impair diabetes management, while blood sugar fluctuations can further worsen brain health.


Harnessing Global Expertise

Dr. R. M. Anjana, President of MDRF, said the collaboration will leverage international expertise to identify early indicators of brain ageing in diabetics, with potential implications for preventive and therapeutic strategies.

Prof. Siddharthan Chandran, Director of UK DRI, called the partnership “a critical step in uniting global resources to understand how metabolic disorders influence brain function,” underscoring the real-world benefits of such collaborations.

Prof. KVS Hari of CBR at IISc Bengaluru highlighted that the centre’s focus on neurodegenerative diseases complements the initiative, enabling researchers to connect metabolic dysfunction with cognitive outcomes.

Visiting faculty Prof. Henrik Zetterberg of the University of Gothenburg described the effort as “an exciting frontier in dementia research,” noting that studying metabolic factors alongside brain biomarkers could yield new mechanistic insights and intervention strategies.


A Step Toward Integrated Research

This study signals a broader shift in understanding diabetes—not merely as a metabolic condition but as a disease with far-reaching neurological consequences. Researchers hope that the findings will inform strategies for early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, bridging the fields of endocrinology and neuroscience.
