India Completes Reconstruction of 30 Historical Heritage Sites in Nepal

Inauguration of 'Shree Kumari Chhen' and 'Nai Kumari Niwas' Marks Milestone

Kathmandu | August 24, 2026 | India has played a pivotal role in the reconstruction of 30 historical and cultural heritage sites in Nepal, which were damaged by the devastating 2015 earthquake. A significant cultural site, known as 'Shree Kumari Chhen' and 'Nai Kumari Niwas', in Nepal's Patan city, was grandly inaugurated on Monday, having been rebuilt with India's assistance.

This project brings the total number of cultural heritage sites preserved by India under its post-earthquake reconstruction aid in eight districts of Nepal to 30. The joint inauguration of this cultural site was performed with traditional rituals by Ambassador of India to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, Nepali Parliamentarian Jagdish Kharel, and Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Chiribabu Maharjan.

The Indian Embassy shared on the social media platform 'X' that the Government of India provided a grant of approximately 5 crore Nepali Rupees for the reconstruction of 'Shree Kumari Chhen' and 'Nai Kumari Niwas'. The implementation of this project was overseen by CLPIU (Building and Housing), while the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) provided design and project management consultancy services.

Symbol of Shared Heritage

During the inauguration ceremony, Parliamentarian Jagdish Kharel lauded the invaluable assistance provided by the Government of India for this heritage conservation initiative. Meanwhile, Lalitpur Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan expressed deep gratitude for India's significant contribution to the reconstruction and preservation of cultural heritage sites in Lalitpur and other districts.

In his address, Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava emphasized the deep-rooted cultural and civilizational ties between India and Nepal spanning centuries. He assured India's continued support for the preservation of Nepal's historical monuments and stated that these reconstructed structures will stand as enduring symbols of the shared heritage and friendship between the two nations.

Comprehensive Reconstruction Efforts

According to the Indian Embassy, India has not only collaborated in the conservation of cultural heritage but has also provided assistance in other crucial sectors under its 'Neighbourhood First' policy. Post-earthquake, in addition to the conservation of 30 cultural heritage sites across eight districts of Nepal, the Government of India has also actively supported the reconstruction of 50,000 private houses in Gorkha and Nuwakot districts, 85 educational institutions in eight districts, and 133 health facilities in 11 districts.

These efforts have helped restore normalcy to the lives of various communities in Nepal.
