Strengthening Regional Ties Through 'Neighborhood First' Policy

India is actively engaged in bolstering regional cooperation with its bordering nations on trade, connectivity, and security fronts under its 'Neighborhood First' policy. This initiative aims to foster economic growth and collectively address security challenges within the South Asian region.

Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha from MP Yusuf Pathan, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirtivardhan Singh stated that India has adopted a dynamic and results-oriented diplomatic roadmap with its immediate neighbors. The primary objective is to accelerate economic development and confront security challenges collaboratively.

Expanding Digital and Financial Connectivity

The Ministry reports that India's engagement with neighboring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and the Maldives has evolved beyond traditional cooperation. The nation has entered a new era of digital and financial connectivity.

Under this policy, India has inked new agreements to strengthen digital payment systems with these countries, significantly easing cross-border trade and tourism. This move is expected to create a more seamless transactional environment for businesses and individuals.

Promoting Digital Infrastructure and Cybersecurity

The government is extensively promoting the development of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in neighboring countries, encouraging the application of space technology, and fostering cutting-edge cybersecurity cooperation. This strategic push aims to leverage India's expertise to accelerate digital transformation across the region.

These initiatives are designed to enhance the digital capabilities of partner nations, thereby fostering greater economic integration and improving service delivery through technology.

Enhancing Energy and Transport Connectivity

Broadening the scope of new initiatives, India is focusing not only on transportation routes but also on establishing networks of cross-border electricity grids and petroleum pipelines under energy partnerships. This integrated approach seeks to secure energy supplies and improve logistical efficiency.

Beyond traditional security, these agreements now specifically encompass modern security domains such as climate security, food security, human security, and disaster management. This reflects a holistic approach to regional stability.

Facilitating Trade and Strategic Partnerships

To ensure seamless cross-border trade, Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) have been modernized. Furthermore, connectivity for passengers and freight is being elevated to new levels through railway diplomacy.

Diplomatic experts believe that this multilateral cooperation in security and infrastructure will not only safeguard India's borders but also establish the nation as a reliable and responsible strategic partner in the South Asian region.
