India-Based AI YouTube Channel Tops Global Charts, Earning $4.25 Million Annually

A recent global study on AI-generated YouTube content has revealed that an India-based channel has emerged as the most-viewed of its kind, generating an estimated $4.25 million (around Rs 38 crore) per year. The report, conducted by video-editing platform Kapwing, examined 15,000 of the world’s most popular YouTube channels, identifying hundreds that rely entirely on AI-generated “slop” content—videos produced with minimal human input, primarily aimed at maximizing views rather than delivering meaningful storytelling.

The Rise of AI-Driven Content

Kapwing’s analysis found 278 channels made entirely of AI slop, collectively amassing over 63 billion views and 221 million subscribers. These figures highlight a rapidly growing niche within the digital ecosystem, where cheaply produced AI content can reach vast audiences with minimal investment.

The standout channel, Bandar Apna Dost, features animated shorts showcasing an anthropomorphic rhesus monkey and a muscular, Hulk-like character in humorous, absurd scenarios. The channel has garnered more than 2.07 billion views and over 2.76 million subscribers, demonstrating how AI-generated content can quickly achieve mass appeal.

Rohini Lakshane, a technology and digital rights researcher, told The Guardian that the channel’s popularity likely stems from its “absurdity, hyper-masculine tropes, and lack of plot,” which makes the videos highly accessible for new viewers.

Implications for YouTube and Content Quality

Kapwing’s report also revealed that AI-generated videos account for a significant portion of recommended content. For new users, over 20 percent of suggested videos are classified as AI slop, raising concerns about the quality of content circulating on the platform.

Industry observers warn that such mass-produced material may overshadow creator-driven, thoughtful content, as YouTube’s algorithm prioritizes watch time and engagement metrics over originality and narrative depth.

Nevertheless, the financial and audience success of channels like Bandar Apna Dost underscores the potential for AI-powered content to generate global reach and revenue, suggesting that automated content creation is poised to become a major factor in shaping the future of online media.

As AI tools become increasingly sophisticated, analysts predict more creators will experiment with automated production to tap into YouTube’s algorithmic amplification, prompting ongoing debates about quality, ethics, and the evolving nature of digital storytelling.
