India and Nepal Boost Bilateral Ties With UPI Link and Key Reconstruction Projects

Expanding Digital and Financial Connectivity

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met his visiting Nepali counterpart Shisir Khanal in New Delhi to review bilateral relations. The two leaders jointly launched the linkage between India’s UPI (Unified Payments Interface) and Nepal’s National Payments Interface.

This major digital milestone is designed to facilitate quick and secure cross-border personal remittances. Additionally, both leaders witnessed the exchange of an MoU between Digital India Bhashini and Kathmandu University.

This collaboration will co-create the National Digital Infrastructure for a ‘Voice First’ Language Translation platform specifically designed for Nepal. This targets newer domains like startups, artificial intelligence, and digital capacity building.

Post-Earthquake Reconstruction and Development Cooperation

During the meeting, Dr. Jaishankar virtually handed over 72 health facilities and 12 cultural heritage projects to Nepal. These initiatives were built under the Reconstruction programme post-2015 earthquake, symbolizing India's developmental support.

The External Affairs Minister reiterated India's commitment to work with Nepal for the mutual progress, prosperity, and well-being of their citizens. He pointed out the strong complementarities between the objectives of the Nepal government and India’s neighborhood initiatives.

According to Dr. Jaishankar, the bilateral ties have steadily developed across several sectors, including:

• Investments and energy, especially hydropower development
• Development cooperation and capacity building
• Education, disaster response, and culture
• Sports

A Shared Heritage and Border Security

In his remarks, EAM Jaishankar emphasized that India and Nepal collaborate closely to maintain security along their long and uniquely open border. He noted that the two countries have always stood by each other in times of need, building on vibrant people-to-people ties and shared cultural and religious traditions.

Minister Khanal reciprocated the warmth, stating that India is Nepal's most important partner and that Nepal has placed the highest priority on its ties with India.

The Foreign Affairs Minister of Nepal also extended his gratitude to India for the vital supply of fuel and fertilisers amid the ongoing West Asian crisis, underscoring the strong strategic partnership.
