In a rare moment of joy at a place usually filled with tense exchanges and urgent complaints, laughter echoed through Bajaria Police Station on Sunday. The reason — police officers returned stolen bicycles to a group of delighted children, turning an ordinary investigation into an act of community warmth.
The initiative came after station in-charge Inspector Shilpa Kaurav received multiple complaints from distraught children whose bicycles had been stolen. Determined to act swiftly, she formed a special investigation team, which managed to solve the case within 24 hours, recovering 10 bicycles — nine of which belonged to children between 8 and 13 years old.
An 11-Year-Old’s Complaint Sparked the Investigation
The case began when an 11-year-old boy and his father, Ravi Shankar Dwivedi of Krishna Nagar, reported the theft of his bicycle on October 24. Initially treated as a routine case, it took a serious turn the following day when eight more children arrived at the station with similar complaints.
Realising a pattern, the police analysed CCTV footage and gathered local intelligence, which led them to the arrest of Dinesh Kevat (30), a resident of Kararia Farm near Hanuman Mandir.
Addiction Behind the Crimes
During questioning, Kevat confessed to the thefts and guided officers to a deserted area where he had hidden the stolen bicycles, valued at around ₹1 lakh.
Inspector Kaurav said the accused was addicted to drugs and alcohol and had a history of domestic disputes, though no prior criminal record. Kevat has since been sent to jail.
A Heartwarming Reunion
The usually somber police station turned festive as children arrived with their parents to reclaim their bicycles — some brand new, others still wrapped in protective covers. Smiles replaced tears as officers handed over each bicycle.
One child, beaming with joy, turned to an officer and said, “Yes, uncle, thank you!” when asked if he was happy — a moment that moved even the cops.
Inspector Kaurav said the effort went beyond recovering property:
“Owning a bicycle is the biggest dream for children of this age. When they lost it, they were heartbroken. We wanted to return their smiles — and today, we feel equally happy doing that.”
Officers SI Arvind Kumar Singh, SI Kunj Bihari Singh, ASI Ganjan Singh, and ASI Raghvendra Singh were also appreciated for their quick and empathetic action.
