Tragic Loss in Assam
Two pilots were killed on Friday after their Sukhoi-30MKI fighter aircraft crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. The crash occurred during a training mission, the Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed.
The deceased pilots have been identified as Sqn Ldr Anuj and Flt Lt Purvesh Duragkar. The IAF expressed its condolences to the bereaved families.
Sequence of Events
The twin-engine jet took off from the Jorhat air base, a key forward base in the northeast, on Thursday evening. Contact was lost mid-flight.
Defence PRO Lieutenant Colonel M Rawat stated the last communication was recorded at 7.42pm. Radar contact was subsequently lost over the forested hills of Karbi Anglong.
Search and Rescue Efforts
Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion. Teams from the IAF, police, civil administration, and villagers initiated a search through the night.
After trekking through the difficult terrain, rescue personnel located the debris of the aircraft around 1am on Friday.
