In a dramatic incident that unfolded on Saturday, October 25, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) S. Chaitanya Kumar of Hyderabad’s South East Zone was allegedly attacked by a mobile phone thief while attempting to apprehend him near Victoria Playground in Chaderghat.

According to police officials, the DCP was returning to his office after a meeting with Hyderabad Commissioner of Police VC Sajjanar in Banjara Hills when he and his team spotted a man snatching a mobile phone. When the police intervened, the suspect turned violent.

Knife Attack Leads to Exchange of Fire

Commissioner VC Sajjanar, briefing reporters on the incident, identified the accused as Mohammed Omar Ansari, a resident of Kamathipura, and described him as a “notorious rowdy-sheeter” with close to 20 criminal cases, including charges of extortion, property theft, and illegal possession of arms.

“When the DCP’s team tried to catch him, Ansari pulled out a knife and attacked both the officer and his personal security officer (PSO). In response, DCP Chaitanya fired two rounds in self-defence, hitting Ansari in the hand and abdomen,” Sajjanar said.

The DCP’s gunman was also injured during the scuffle. Both men were rushed to Germanten Hospital in Nampally for treatment. Police later confirmed that DCP Chaitanya is out of danger, while the PSO sustained injuries to his neck, stomach, and legs.

Commissioner Sajjanar revealed that Ansari is a habitual offender, previously booked under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act twice and having served two years in jail. Despite multiple incarcerations, he reportedly continued his involvement in criminal activities after release.

“He is a repeat offender who has shown no sign of reform. We have invoked the PD Act against him in the past, yet he kept returning to crime,” Sajjanar stated. “Public safety is paramount, and if anyone attacks police personnel, the force will naturally respond to protect lives.”
