Hurricane Melissa Leaves 28 Dead in Jamaica; UK Sends Emergency Aid

The Jamaican government has confirmed 28 deaths following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Caribbean.

Packing winds of up to 185 mph, Melissa tore through Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, leaving widespread destruction. The Red Cross described it as a “disaster of unprecedented catastrophe.”

Though the storm weakened before reaching Cuba, it still caused homes to collapse and roads to become impassable. In Haiti, officials said at least 25 people were killed in the southern coastal town of Petit-Goave after the La Digue river burst its banks.

The UK government has announced an additional £5 million in humanitarian aid, bringing total support to £7.5 million, including shelter kits and solar lanterns for those left homeless or without power.

A British repatriation flight departed Jamaica on Saturday to assist stranded citizens, as relief supplies continue to reach some of the hardest-hit areas.

Jamaican authorities expressed condolences to affected families, pledging continued efforts to restore power, communication, and access to isolated communities.
