Hospital Penalized for Biomedical Waste Violation

The Narmadapuram Municipality has imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on Meena Fracture Hospital for the open disposal of biomedical waste within the city. This action was taken due to the hospital management's violation of solid waste management rules.

The hospital has been ordered to deposit the fine amount at the municipality office within three days, failing which further legal action will be initiated. This action was carried out as per the instructions of Chief Municipal Officer Vaibhav Deshmukh, as stated by Anurag Tiwari, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in-charge and Sanitation Inspector.

Inspection Reveals Negligence

During an inspection conducted on the morning of July 23rd, around 9 AM, a pile of medical waste, including syringes, injections, medicine bottles, and plaster casts, was found dumped in front of the hospital. This situation is a clear violation of Rule 4 of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, which mandates hospitals to dispose of their medical waste independently.

Repeated Warnings Ignored

Anurag Tiwari further stated that hospital employees and staff had been repeatedly advised in the past not to discard medical waste on the roads. Despite these warnings, the hospital management failed to address this serious issue, and no improvement efforts were made. The open dumping of medical waste not only increases the risk of infectious diseases in residential areas but has also led to continuous complaints from local residents.

Further Action if Fine Not Paid

The Narmadapuram Municipality has clarified that if the fine amount is not deposited within the stipulated time frame, legal action will be taken against the hospital, and the case will be sent to court. This move is a significant step towards maintaining cleanliness in the city and ensuring public health safety.
