HDFC Bank Says AI Adoption Won’t Lead to Layoffs; Focus on Redeployment

HDFC Bank has ruled out any layoffs due to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), with the technology expected to redeploy employees into more customer-focused and tech-driven roles, Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan said on October 18.

Speaking to the press after the bank’s Q2 earnings announcement, Jagdishan said, “Frankly, AI is not going to have any layoff whatsoever in our bank. I feel this is a massive opportunity to move people from the back end to the front end or to the tech end.

He highlighted that AI will primarily be used for process optimisation and re-engineering, rather than decision-making, to reduce turnaround time, simplify workflows, and enhance customer experience. Jagdishan added, “There is so much runway for growth. We would want to have a lot of people at the front end to engage customers and also in technology to keep innovating with emerging tech that’s rapidly coming over.”

The move reflects the bank’s strategy to leverage AI for operational efficiency while ensuring that employees are redeployed into higher-value functions.
