Haaland Scores Winner as Manchester City Beat Real Madrid 2–1 at the Bernabeu

Manchester City staged a strong comeback to defeat Real Madrid 2–1 in a tense Champions League clash at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, thanks to Nico O’Reilly’s quick reactions and Erling Haaland’s decisive penalty.

Madrid started brightly despite missing eight injured players, including Kylian Mbappé who was only fit enough for the bench. After early chances from Vinícius Jr. and Federico Valverde, Rodrygo broke his nine-month scoring drought, firing low into the corner in the 28th minute.

City, sluggish early on, equalised in the 35th minute when O’Reilly reacted fastest to smash home a rebound after Thibaut Courtois’ save. Five minutes later, City turned the match around: Antonio Rüdiger dragged down Haaland in the box, and following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty. Haaland converted confidently in the 43rd minute — his first-ever goal at the Bernabeu.

City dominated the end of the first half, with Courtois making key saves to keep Madrid in the contest. The Belgian goalkeeper remained Madrid’s standout performer in the second half, denying Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku as City searched for a third goal.

Madrid pushed late on, with Endrick hitting the post in the dying minutes, but the equaliser never came. The Bernabeu crowd repeatedly jeered manager Xabi Alonso, frustrated by the team’s run of just two wins in their last eight matches.

The result lifts Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to fourth in the Champions League standings with 13 points from six matches. Real Madrid drop to seventh with 12 points, having now suffered back-to-back defeats.
