Gwalior-Chambal Rail Line Extended to Veerpur, Boosting Regional Development
Inauguration of broad gauge conversion and train service extension to Veerpur enhances rail connectivity and spurs socio-economic growth in the Gwalior-Chambal region.

Virtual Inauguration Boosts Gwalior-Chambal Rail Connectivity
West Central Railway Headquarters announced that Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, alongside Union Minister for Communications, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, virtually inaugurated the broad gauge conversion of the Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Veerpur rail section. The extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service to Veerpur was also flagged off, strengthening rail connectivity in the Gwalior-Chambal region and fostering new development momentum.
This inauguration marks a significant achievement for West Central Railway, poised to promote the socio-economic development of the Gwalior-Chambal area. The project is set to directly benefit residents of over 100 villages, making their travel easier, safer, and more affordable. Improved access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, along with a boost to local businesses, are anticipated outcomes.
New Rail Link Promises Enhanced Accessibility
Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the 56-kilometer Kailaras-Veerpur section's gauge conversion as a major milestone for the Gwalior-Chambal region. He stated that over 100 villages across Morena and Sheopur districts, including Banmore, Joura, Kailaras, Sabalgarh, Veerpur, Sheopur, and Karahal, will experience direct benefits. The Minister also revealed plans for further expansion of this rail line to Sheopur Kalan and eventually to Kota, connecting the region to key educational and industrial hubs.
The extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service to Veerpur now directly connects Veerpur, Vijaypur, and Sabalgarh to Gwalior. This is particularly crucial for passengers in rural and tribal areas, often residing in remote locations, who require improved public transportation. Enhanced rail connectivity will facilitate easier access to education, better healthcare services, and employment opportunities, essential for the region's overall development.
Phased Implementation of Ambitious Rail Project
This ambitious rail project has been completed in several phases and opened for passenger traffic:
- Biralanagar to Rairu (11 km) - Commissioned in May 2023.
- Rairu to Sumavali (22 km) - Commissioned in August 2023.
- Sumavali to Joura (14 km) - Opened for traffic in November 2023.
- Joura to Kailaras (14 km) - Commissioned in February 2024.
- Kailaras to Sabalgarh (29 km) - Passenger train operations commenced in 2025.
- Sabalgarh to Veerpur (27 km) - Opened for traffic in 2026.
The Railway Minister also informed that construction work from Veerpur to Seroni Road (37 km) and Seroni Road to Sheopur Kalan (33 km) is nearing completion. It is expected that the entire Gwalior-Sheopur Kalan rail line will be dedicated to the public in the coming months, marking a new chapter in the region's rail connectivity.
Renewed Direction for Railway Development in Madhya Pradesh
Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the government's commitment to railway development in Madhya Pradesh, noting a substantial increase in the state's annual rail budget. The average budget grew from ₹632 crore during 2009-14 to ₹15,188 crore in 2026-27, representing an approximately 24-fold increase. Currently, rail projects worth around ₹1.55 lakh crore are underway in the state.
Furthermore, 80 railway stations in Madhya Pradesh are undergoing modernization and redevelopment. The state is served by 5 Vande Bharat and 7 Amrit Bharat trains, offering passengers fast and comfortable travel experiences. Since 2014, Indian Railways has conducted over 5.54 lakh recruitments, contributing to employment generation. The ongoing complete electrification efforts have significantly reduced reliance on diesel and imported fuels.
Regional Leaders Welcome Expansion and Outline Future Plans
Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia described the occasion as 'historic' for the Gwalior-Chambal region. He noted that approximately 10,000 people were benefiting daily from the Kailaras section, and the extension to Veerpur will now extend these benefits to a much larger population. He termed this rail link not just a mode of transport but a 'bridge' for development and modern services.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav welcomed the development, stating that the Manmad-Indore new line and the Chambal region's rail expansion will strongly connect the Gwalior-Chambal and Malwa regions. He expressed optimism that this will foster a new industrial corridor, providing significant impetus to emerging sectors such as battery energy storage, footwear, hydrogen manufacturing, and tourism.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Speaker of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Morena MP Shri Shivmangal Singh Tomar, and several distinguished citizens and officials, who expressed their pleasure at the completion of this important project.
