Authorities Rule Out Terror or Organized Crime Links in Random Shooting Spree in Croydon Park

Australian police are preparing to question a man accused of firing up to 50 rounds from a high-powered rifle at random from a Sydney apartment window on Sunday night, an incident that critically injured at least one person. Authorities have ruled out any connection to terrorism or organized crime, leaving investigators to focus on determining the suspect's motive.

The suspect was apprehended in the Croydon Park suburb after allegedly using a .30-calibre rifle to fire the rounds. Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry expressed astonishment that the shooting did not result in fatalities, telling reporters, "It is incredible that nobody died."

Casualties and Investigation Details

Two individuals were taken to the hospital following the incident, with one requiring surgery due to critical injuries, as confirmed by Parry during a briefing broadcast by the ABC. An additional 14 people received treatment at the scene for shock or minor injuries, according to a spokesperson for NSW Ambulance.

Police have confirmed that the suspect had very few recorded interactions with law enforcement over the past two decades. Parry noted that while the man has no recorded mental health history with police, he was being assessed for physical and mental health injuries overnight and on Monday morning before being deemed suitable to return to custody.

The suspect is expected to face firearms-related charges. As of Monday, police are yet to establish the specific motive behind the random shooting, with authorities having definitively ruled out terrorist or religious motivations.
