City Submerged After Hours of Heavy Downpour

Guna city was completely submerged on Tuesday afternoon following torrential rains. With over 90 mm of rainfall recorded in just a few hours, the downpour provided relief from the heat but also led to severe waterlogging.

In low-lying areas like Chaurasia Colony in Gulabganj, water entered homes, causing significant inconvenience to residents. The heavy rainfall also caused knee-deep water to flow on the new road, forcing traders to move their merchandise to safer locations.

Drainage System Exposed Amidst Waterlogging

According to the meteorological department, 84.6 mm of rain was recorded between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM on Monday, with the rain continuing thereafter. This excessive rainfall has significantly boosted the season's rainfall figures.

The city's drainage system was exposed, particularly in colonies where the cleaning of drains had been questionable. The accumulation of water in homes and the subsequent questioning of the system have become a major concern.

Residents Question Municipal Preparedness

Following the ingress of rainwater into homes in Chaurasia Colony, Gulabganj, local residents have raised questions about the preparedness of the municipality. Residents allege that drains in waterlogged areas were not adequately cleaned before the monsoon.

They stated that if drains had been cleared and necessary arrangements for water drainage made in time, such a severe situation would not have arisen even with the first heavy spell of rain. People have demanded that waterlogged areas be identified for immediate drain cleaning and that water be pumped out with machinery where necessary.

The heavy rains on Tuesday also brought back memories of the devastating floods experienced last year. Waterlogging was reported around homes and shops in several parts of the city, including Govind Garden, Nanaxhedi Mandi Gate, and Nichla Bazaar.

Traders Face Losses, Commuters Struggle

Knee-deep water on the new road in the city caused significant losses for traders. Many shopkeepers moved their valuable goods to upper floors or safer locations fearing water ingress. The strong current on the road made walking difficult.

Vehicle operators also faced difficulties on several city routes due to the rain, with commuting becoming particularly challenging for two-wheeler riders in waterlogged low-lying areas. Meanwhile, a large branch of a tree fell onto the road on the main post office route during the heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, causing temporary traffic disruption.

District Records Above Average Rainfall

As of the morning of August 11, 2026, the district had recorded an average rainfall of 620.8 mm, which is 58.9% of the normal average rainfall of 1053.5 mm. Last year, the district had recorded an average of 1167.0 mm of rain during the same period.

Rainfall data from various stations showed: Guna - 308.0 mm, Bamor - 320.6 mm, Aaron - 504.0 mm, Raghougarh - 604.0 mm, Chachoura - 700.0 mm, Kumbhraj - 911.0 mm, and Maksudanpur - 1002.2 mm during this period.

In the last 24 hours, the district recorded an average of 36.9 mm of rain, with specific amounts including: Guna - 9.4 mm, Bamor - 34 mm, Aaron - 13 mm, Raghougarh - 34 mm, Chachoura - 42 mm, Kumbhraj - 91 mm, and Maksudanpur - 35 mm.

The additional heavy rain in the city on Monday afternoon and evening has further increased these figures, with places like Kumbhraj recording excessive rainfall. While Tuesday's rain offered respite from the heat and humidity, it also highlighted the deficiencies in the city's drainage system. Incidents of water entering homes and shops have underscored the urgent need for a permanent drainage solution in affected areas. Demands have been made to the administration and municipality for immediate drain cleaning and the establishment of a permanent drainage system in affected areas.
