Google Chrome Automatically Revokes Notification Permissions for Inactive Sites

October 12, 2025 — Google’s Chrome browser has rolled out a new feature that automatically removes notification permissions for websites users haven’t interacted with recently, aiming to reduce notification overload and improve browsing experience.

According to a blog post by Google on Friday, the update applies to Android and desktop versions but does not affect notifications from installed web apps. The company noted that less than 1% of all notifications receive user interaction, highlighting the increasing disruption caused by inactive site alerts.

Chrome will notify users whenever a site’s notification permissions are revoked. Permissions can be restored at any time through Safety Check or the site’s settings, and users can also disable the auto-revocation feature if they wish to continue receiving notifications.

This move extends Chrome’s existing Safety Check capabilities, which already manage permissions for camera, location, and other sensitive features. Google said tests showed a significant reduction in notification overload with minimal impact on total notification clicks, and even an increase in engagement from sites that send fewer notifications.
