Google AI Overviews Rely Heavily on YouTube for Health Queries, Study Finds

Google’s AI-powered search feature, AI Overviews, most frequently cites YouTube videos when responding to health-related queries, according to a new analysis by German search analytics firm SE Ranking. The findings have raised concerns about the medical reliability of AI-generated health advice.

• YouTube was the most cited source, accounting for 4.4% of references

• References to hospitals, government health portals, and medical associations were significantly lower

• Around 66% of cited sources came from websites with unverified medical credibility

• Less than 1% of sources were from government health agencies or academic journals

The firm noted that most AI-generated health responses relied on YouTube, commercial websites, and blogs, rather than evidence-based medical sources.

Concerns over accuracy:
Researchers flagged instances where AI Overviews provided advice that contradicted standard medical guidance. In one example, the AI reportedly advised pancreatic cancer patients to avoid fatty foods altogether. Medical experts note that such patients are often advised to consume moderate amounts of easily digestible fats, and incorrect guidance could negatively affect nutrition and recovery.

“This suggests that a substantial portion of AI-generated health answers lack evidence-based backing,” SE Ranking said in its analysis.

The findings come as Google continues to expand AI-driven features across its search platform. While AI Overviews are designed to simplify information discovery, experts argue that health-related queries require higher standards of sourcing, transparency, and medical validation.
