Gold Prices Dip Amidst Fed Rate Hike Outlook, Mideast Tensions

The Cliff News | 29 October 2026

Gold (XAU/USD) is trading at the lower end of its daily range, approximately at $4,030, amid a predominantly bearish market sentiment. Fresh buying interest in the US Dollar (USD) following a corrective slide from a two-week high is identified as a significant factor contributing to the pressure on the precious metal.

The US Federal Reserve, in its October policy meeting, decided to hold interest rates steady with a 10-2 vote. However, a notable minority, including Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, favored a quarter-point hike. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized the central bank's ongoing concern about persistent inflation and geopolitical risks during the post-meeting press conference.

Fed's Hawkish Stance Fuels Dollar Demand

These concerns are amplified by energy-driven price pressures, which bolster the prospects for additional tightening measures by the Federal Reserve. The CME Group's FedWatch Tool indicates that traders are assigning an approximately 80% probability to a US central bank interest rate increase at its December policy meeting. This hawkish outlook is reviving demand for the USD and, consequently, driving capital away from non-yielding assets like gold.

Middle East Tensions Bolster Safe-Haven Dollar

Adding to the bearish narrative for gold, escalating tensions in the Middle East are underpinning the safe-haven appeal of the US Dollar. Reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest that US officials have advised several Gulf Arab nations to prepare for a brief but intense military operation against Iran following the November 3 midterm elections. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the country's armed forces are ready to defend it, while also maintaining dialogue with intermediaries.

Regional mediators, led by Qatar, are actively engaged in efforts to restart negotiations between the US and Iran to avert a resurgence of conflict. In a separate diplomatic initiative, US Vice President JD Vance reportedly sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, aiming to revive peace talks.

Regional Conflicts Underscore Geopolitical Risk

Despite diplomatic overtures, geopolitical risks remain a significant factor, underscored by ongoing fierce fighting between the Iran-backed Houthi group and the Saudi Arabia-backed Yemeni government. The Houthis recently claimed responsibility for targeting Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura oil refinery, the kingdom's largest, with a ballistic missile. Earlier attacks on pumping stations along Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline have also raised concerns about supply disruptions, thereby supporting crude oil prices.

This complex geopolitical landscape favors USD bulls and suggests that the path of least resistance for gold prices remains downward. However, traders may exercise caution and await the release of key US macroeconomic data, including the Advance Q3 GDP report and the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, before making substantial bets.

Technical Outlook for XAU/USD

From a technical perspective, the XAU/USD pair has been navigating a downward-sloping channel for approximately a month, maintaining a bearish near-term tone below the 100-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA) on the 4-hour chart. While the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) has turned positive and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovers near neutral levels around 47.5, these indicators suggest a potential corrective bounce within a broader downtrend.

Any attempted recovery in gold prices is likely to encounter initial resistance around the 100-period EMA at $4,105. A stronger barrier is expected at the top of the descending channel, near $4,125, where selling pressure could re-emerge. On the downside, the psychological mark of $4,000 is anticipated to serve as the next significant support level. A decisive break below the lower boundary of the descending channel, around $3,946, would reinforce the prevailing bearish structure and open the door for further price declines.
