A devastating fire at Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, has claimed at least 25 lives and left several injured. Eyewitnesses said panic spread rapidly as flames engulfed the club, driving some patrons downstairs into the kitchen, where they became trapped alongside staff members.

• The fire broke out around 12:04 am, reportedly caused by a cylinder blast, and quickly consumed the palm-leaf structure.

• Narrow access and a remote location delayed fire brigade response; engines were halted nearly 400 metres away.

• Most victims succumbed to smoke inhalation, while a few suffered burn injuries. Of the deceased, 14 were nightclub staff, including three women, with the remaining being tourists.

"There was sudden commotion as flames erupted. Many ran downstairs into the kitchen and got trapped with staff," recounted Fatima Shaikh, who was on the dance floor. Videos circulating on social media show performers fleeing the stage as smoke and fire spread rapidly.

Government and Political Reactions

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, offering support to the injured and families of the deceased.
