Global Antibiotic Resistance Rising Rapidly, WHO Warns

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning about the accelerating rise of antibiotic resistance (AMR) worldwide. Data from 104 countries submitted to the Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) reveal that bacterial resistance to 40% of monitored antibiotics increased 5–15% annually between 2018 and 2023. By 2023, 1 in 6 common bacterial infections globally was resistant to antibiotic treatment.

Key Findings

  • The report analysed resistance to 22 critical antibiotics, including treatments for urinary tract, gastrointestinal, and bloodstream infections, as well as gonorrhoea.

  • Resistance is forcing clinicians to rely on intravenous and “last-resort” antibiotics, which are expensive and often unavailable in low- and middle-income countries.

  • Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae are the biggest threat. Over 40% of E. coli and 55% of K. pneumoniae strains are resistant to third-generation cephalosporins; in parts of Africa, resistance exceeds 70%.

Regional Disparities

  • Southeast Asia & Eastern Mediterranean: 33% of bacterial infections resistant

  • Africa: 1 in 5 infections resistant

  • Europe & Western Pacific: 1 in 10–11 infections resistant

Surveillance Progress and Gaps

  • GLASS participation has grown from 25 countries in 2016 to 104 countries in 2023, yet 48% of countries submitted no data.

  • Surveillance remains weakest in low- and middle-income countries, which also face the highest resistance rates.

  • WHO highlights that poor monitoring can create a vicious cycle, where limited detection fuels further spread of AMR.

The Way Forward: Prevention

WHO experts stress prevention as the most effective strategy:

  • Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) improvements

  • Vaccination (including pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines)

  • Public education about appropriate antibiotic use

Dr. Yvan Hutin, Director of WHO’s AMR Division, warned: “As antibiotic resistance continues to rise, we are running out of treatment options, especially in countries where infection control is weak and access to effective medicines is limited.”

WHO urges global investment in public health infrastructure, vaccine access, and awareness campaigns to curb the spread of drug-resistant infections before they become untreatable.
