Glenn Maxwell Eyes Comeback After Wrist Surgery Ahead of India T20 Series

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is targeting a return for the latter matches of the upcoming T20I series against India following successful surgery on his fractured right wrist.

The 36-year-old star underwent the procedure after sustaining the injury during a net session in Mount Maunganui, when a ball from teammate Mitchell Owen struck his wrist. Maxwell, who will miss the first two T20Is on October 29 and 31, hopes the surgery will accelerate his recovery and allow him to feature in the final three matches in Hobart (November 2), Gold Coast (November 6), and Brisbane (November 8).

Surgery to Fast-Track Recovery

Maxwell told reporters at the KFC Big Bash League (BBL) kit launch that opting for surgery was aimed at maximizing his chances of participation. "The doctors gave me two options: miss the series completely or have surgery and potentially play. Choosing surgery gives me a shot at the latter games and ensures I’ll be ready for the BBL," he said.

Having removed his cast, Maxwell is now wearing a molded splint and has been cleared to begin gentle wrist movements under the guidance of a hand therapist. He emphasized that pain management will remain crucial, particularly when resuming batting activities.

Adjusting Training and Managing Risks

The injury has prompted Maxwell to reconsider his approach to bowling in nets, especially against power hitters such as Owen, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, and Cameron Green. "The pace and strength coming back make it risky. I’ll focus on safer lines until my wrist fully recovers," he explained.

Despite the setback, Maxwell remains in strong form. He delivered a match-winning 62* against South Africa in August’s T20I series and recently scored 107 off 82 balls in the domestic One-Day Cup for Victoria against Queensland.

Focus on Big Bash League and Mentorship Opportunities

Looking beyond the T20I series, Maxwell expressed excitement about leading the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming BBL season. He welcomed the addition of former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has joined Sydney Thunder after retiring from the IPL, as a significant boost for the league.

"Ashwin brings immense experience and knowledge. His presence will benefit not only his team but the competition as a whole, elevating the level of play and fan engagement," Maxwell said.

Broader Implications for Australia-India T20 Series

Maxwell’s potential return could prove pivotal for Australia in the T20I series against India. As a dynamic middle-order batsman and part-time bowler, his presence adds depth to the squad. Recovery timelines for wrist injuries in elite athletes can be unpredictable, making his progress closely monitored by both team management and fans.
