Gavaskar Questions Indian Batsmen's Failure in Run Chases
Sunil Gavaskar criticizes Indian batsmen's lack of responsibility and failure to capitalize on good starts in T20 run chases.

Gavaskar Slams Indian Batting After T20 Loss
Following India's 24-run defeat in the fourth T20 International against West Indies, former captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has sharply criticized the Indian batting order. He emphasized the need for Indian batsmen to show greater responsibility while chasing targets.
According to Gavaskar, it will be extremely difficult for the team to achieve consistent success if batsmen do not take their roles seriously. In the thrilling match played on October 14, West Indies posted a formidable 247 runs for three wickets after batting first. In response, India was bowled out for 223 in 20 overs, with West Indies winning by 24 runs to level the five-match T20 series 2-2.
Serious Questions on Run-Chase Strategy
Speaking with GeoStar, Gavaskar stated that the Indian team must immediately improve its approach to run chases. He stressed the urgent need for the batting unit to collectively shoulder more responsibility.
In his view, merely starting aggressively is not enough when chasing a large target. It is equally crucial for batsmen to pace their innings according to the game situation and, most importantly, preserve vital wickets. Sanju Samson provided a blistering start for India in this match, scoring 56 off just 23 balls and raising strong hopes for a win. Abhishek Sharma contributed 29 runs but failed to convert his good start into a big innings, while Ishan Kishan was out for just six, and captain Shreyas Iyer managed only 16.
The continuous fall of wickets ultimately left the Indian team far behind the target. Gavaskar, while acknowledging Samson's aggressive start, lamented that the other batsmen failed to build on it. He also deemed Abhishek Sharma's batting below his usual standards and questioned Ishan Kishan's quick dismissal and Shreyas Iyer's recent poor form.
He believes that when chasing such large targets in international cricket, batsmen must understand the nuances of the game and strategize accordingly. Gavaskar suggested that on pitches affected by dew, the Indian team should have shown more dominance with their batting. He expects more confidence and better performance from a team that has won two consecutive T20 World Cups when chasing big targets.
Bowlers Defended, But Batting Under Scrutiny
While batting failure was a major reason for India's loss, the bowlers also couldn't entirely prevent West Indies' aggressive batsmen from scoring heavily. Despite this, Sunil Gavaskar refrained from solely blaming the young and inexperienced bowlers for the defeat.
He stated that new bowlers need adequate time to gain experience in international cricket and must be allowed opportunities to concede runs against strong batsmen and learn from their mistakes. According to Gavaskar, while there might be some shortcomings in the bowling, attributing the entire loss to the bowlers is unfair. In a game like cricket, both batting and bowling departments must fulfill their responsibilities diligently for a win.
Expectations from a World-Winning Team
Gavaskar specifically mentioned the dew-affected conditions in the match, suggesting that the Indian team should have displayed greater dominance in their batting on such pitches. He highlighted that a team with two consecutive T20 World Cup titles is expected to exhibit more confidence and perform better while chasing large targets.
However, in this particular encounter, the Indian batsmen failed to deliver the performance expected of them. The Indian team now faces a significant challenge to rectify their mistakes in the decisive match. Batsmen must focus on capitalizing on opening partnerships, minimizing unnecessary risks, and preserving key wickets in the middle order. Additionally, maintaining the run rate under pressure will be crucial for the team's success.
This loss against West Indies raises serious questions about India's run-chasing strategy. Sunil Gavaskar's core message is that collective responsibility, along with individual performance, is essential for victory. It remains to be seen how seriously the Indian batsmen will take this vital lesson in the decider, as the team's success largely depends on it.
