Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat narrowly escaped injury after his vehicle was involved in a road accident near Kharoli on National Highway 58 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday evening. Officials confirmed that Rawat is safe, though one police personnel accompanying him sustained minor injuries.
Convoy Crash During Delhi–Dehradun Journey
According to Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Raghavendra Mishra, the incident occurred between 7:30 pm and 8 pm when Rawat’s convoy was en route from Delhi to Dehradun.
A pedestrian suddenly appeared in front of a police escort vehicle, forcing the driver to brake abruptly. This led to a chain collision involving several vehicles in the convoy, including Rawat’s car.
Police immediately evacuated the former CM from his damaged vehicle and shifted him to another car, allowing the convoy to continue its journey toward Dehradun.
Minor Injury to Police Escort; Rawat Assures He’s Fine
SP Mishra said that a head constable travelling in the escort vehicle suffered minor injuries but was treated on the spot. “The former CM is completely safe, and no major harm occurred,” he confirmed.
Rawat later took to X (formerly Twitter) to reassure supporters about his condition. “There is no need to worry. I am perfectly fine. The car has definitely been damaged, but everything else is okay,” he wrote.
Police and Party Leaders Respond
Congress leader Chaudhary Yashpal Singh also confirmed Rawat’s safety and praised the swift response of the accompanying police team. “The alertness of the police prevented a serious mishap,” he said.
The Meerut police have since cleared the accident site, and traffic movement on the national highway has returned to normal.
