Five police injured as demolition drive near mosque in Delhi turns violent

A court-ordered anti-encroachment operation near the Syed Faiz Elahi mosque and graveyard at Turkman Gate, Delhi, descended into violence early Wednesday, with at least five police personnel injured after residents allegedly pelted stones at officials.

The operation was carried out by around 300 officials and workers of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on land adjoining the religious site at Ramlila Maidan, acting on Delhi High Court directions.

What triggered the clash

According to Delhi Police, a group of residents opposed the demolition and began throwing stones at MCD teams. Police responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd and secure the area.

Senior police officer Nidhin Valsan said that 25–30 people were involved in the stone pelting, resulting in minor injuries to five officers. He confirmed that a banquet hall and a dispensary were demolished during the drive.

Authorities said the operation was conducted late at night to reduce disruption for the local population.
