Sindarov's Unstoppable Lead

The FIDE Candidates Tournament is nearing its halfway mark, with Javokhir Sindarov leading the Open section with an impressive 5.5/6.

His performance is considered by Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay as being in “a different class altogether.” Sindarov's win against Wei Yi was particularly impressive.

“The best game of the round was between Wei Yi and Sindarov. Sindarov simply outplayed him in a very strange positional battle," said Thipsay.

 

Fabiano Caruana sits in second place with 4 points, a significant 1.5 points behind Sindarov. R Praggnanandhaa is further back with 3 points.

Praggnanandhaa's Challenge

While Praggnanandhaa showed ambition against Hikaru Nakamura, the game ended in a draw. He needs to find a way to close the gap with Sindarov to remain a serious contender.

 

"Praggnanandhaa did play quite ambitiously against Nakamura... It was a well-fought draw, but equality nonetheless," stated Thipsay.

 

Next round, Praggnanandhaa faces Caruana. This will be a critical match for his tournament hopes.

Indian Women's Resurgence

Vaishali Rameshbabu and Divya Deshmukh secured important wins in Round 6 in the Women's section.

These victories, although somewhat erratic, have propelled them into the chasing pack behind leader Anna Muzychuk (4/6). Vaishali's aggressive play paid off against Kateryna Lagno, while Divya capitalized on Bibisara Assaubayeva's errors.

Vaishali's Risky Strategy

Vaishali's game against Lagno was a rollercoaster, with her opting for aggression, but according to Thipsay, at the expense of structural integrity.

 

"Vaishali tried to complicate matters at the cost of positional concessions," Thipsay observed.

 

Divya's Great Escape

Divya's win over Assaubayeva followed a similar pattern. After facing difficulties, she capitalized on her opponent's unforced errors.

 

"At this stage, Divya started drifting. She was facing serious difficulties by move 24... Eventually, Divya got the opportunity to strategically and tactically outplay her for a win," remarked Thipsay.
