The Nutrition Rehabilitation Center (NRC) at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia District Hospital in Farrukhabad district has emerged as a beacon of hope in the ongoing campaign against severe malnutrition. Through its effective treatment protocols and robust follow-up mechanisms, the center has achieved a remarkable 95% success rate in fully recovering children from malnutrition.

Despite its modest capacity of just ten beds, this NRC has carved a niche for itself among the top ten centers in the state, witnessing a consistent demand for the treatment of severely malnourished children. In June, the center demonstrated its high efficiency and reliability by recording an occupancy of 162 bed-days.

Commitment to Recovery and Comprehensive Care

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Anand Upadhyay stated that the health department is fully committed to restoring children suffering from severe acute malnutrition to a normal lifestyle. Every child admitted to the NRC is kept under close observation by specialist doctors for approximately 14 days.

During this period, all essential services, including medicines, high-energy-dense nutritious food, and regular health check-ups, are provided completely free of charge. Additionally, arrangements are made for the food of the mother accompanying the child, along with a daily incentive of ₹50. This multi-faceted support not only alleviates the financial burden on families but also boosts their morale.

The Significance of a Robust Follow-up System

Dr. Upadhyay emphasized the critical importance of continuous monitoring of each child's progress even after discharge from the hospital. As a significant step towards eradicating malnutrition at its root, follow-ups are ensured for each child four times at 15-day intervals.

During each follow-up visit, parents receive an incentive of ₹140. This incentive system ensures that parents regularly bring their children for check-ups, leading to sustained improvement in their nutritional status. This systematic follow-up approach has become an integral part of the strategy to overcome malnutrition.

The daily operations of the Nutrition Rehabilitation Center are managed with immense dedication and accountability under the leadership of Medical Officer Dr. Vivek Saxena. Dr. Saxena's skilled team comprises Dietician Mrs. Sangeeta Shukla, six trained staff nurses, and a dedicated cook.

This team not only provides individual care for the children but also ensures they receive a balanced and nutritious diet. Furthermore, mothers receive extensive counseling on infant care, the importance of breastfeeding, and methods for preparing nutritious meals at home. The team's primary goal is not just to increase the children's weight but to empower the entire family with nutritional health awareness.

The District Magistrate and the Chief Medical Officer regularly visit the NRC to encourage the admitted children and their mothers. During these visits, gifts such as fruits, clothes, and Baby Johnson kits are presented to the children, promoting their psychological well-being and a positive outlook towards treatment.
