Farmers' Mahapanchayat in Delhi Today, Security Tightened at Shambhu Border

Farmers' Mahapanchayat Convened in Delhi
A significant farmers' Mahapanchayat (grand assembly) is scheduled in Delhi today, July 21, 2026. Farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and other states are heading towards Delhi's Kisan Ghat to participate.
Protest Against India-US Trade Deal
The primary objective of this Mahapanchayat is to voice opposition to the proposed India-US trade agreement. The farmers are demanding the complete scrapping of this deal.
Heightened Security and Detentions
In anticipation of the large farmer gathering, the Haryana government has significantly bolstered security measures across Delhi's borders, including the Shambhu border. To prevent farmers from reaching Delhi, special barricades have been erected at the Shambhu border. A substantial police force is deployed, and cement blocks have been placed on the Ghaggar river bridge to halt movement.
Farmer Leader Detained
Gurnam Singh Chaduni, the chief of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Chaduni faction), was taken into custody by police in Kurukshetra district on Monday evening. Chaduni was en route to Delhi with his supporters to attend the Mahapanchayat.
Farmer Protests and Toll Plaza Blockade
Another group of farmers staged a demonstration at a toll plaza on the Hisar-Chandigarh section of the National Highway in Thana village. Police intercepted and detained Gurnam Singh Chaduni's vehicle on National Highway 152D. The spokesperson for the Bharatiya Kisan Union, Rakesh Bains, has also reportedly been detained. A faction of farmers also blocked the Shambhu toll plaza near Ambala, causing temporary traffic disruption.
“We want to go to Delhi peacefully, but the Haryana government is stopping us at the Shambhu border,” stated Pandher, a farmer leader from Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab, to reporters. He emphasized that farmers demand the complete cancellation of the proposed India-US trade agreement.
Farmer leaders are set to convene at the Shambhu border to deliberate and finalize their future strategy.
