Assault on Devotees at Mahakal's Doorstep, Family of Home Ministry Official Among Victims

The Cliff News | Ujjain | September 3, 2026 – Another incident of alleged highhandedness by flower and prasad vendors has surfaced near the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, raising serious questions about the management of this sacred site.

On Wednesday, Yogesh Sahu, a senior accountant posted in the Union Home Ministry, and his family, who had come from Gwalior to offer prayers to Baba Mahakal, were allegedly beaten following a dispute over purchasing prasad (religious offerings).

The victim family has accused the shopkeepers of pressuring them to buy prasad, using abusive language when they refused, and resorting to physical assault. Several family members, including women, sustained injuries in the incident. The police have arrested one main accused, while efforts are underway to apprehend others.

In his complaint to the police, Yogesh Sahu stated that he had come to Ujjain with his wife Neha Kumari, father Omprakash Sahu, and other family members to visit Mahakal. While proceeding towards the temple, a flower and prasad vendor near the Bharat Mata Temple stopped them and insisted they keep their belongings at his shop.

After placing their belongings, as the family moved forward with a basket of prasad, the vendor allegedly pressured them to buy more prasad than required for the number of people in the family. A dispute arose when the family refused to purchase such a large quantity.

Dispute Over Prasad Price

According to the complaint, the vendor initially offered a basket of prasad for approximately 100 rupees. However, he later claimed that because there were six people in the family, they would have to buy a prasad basket costing around 350 rupees per person.

Yogesh Sahu refused to buy such an expensive basket, leading to an argument. The family alleges that at this point, the shopkeeper and his associates resorted to abusive language and began the assault.

Yogesh Sahu reportedly sustained a head injury, while his relative Ankita was injured in the elbow.

Allegations of Shoving Women, Including Pregnant Wife

During the altercation, there were also allegations of shoving women. Neha Kumari, Yogesh Sahu's wife, who is reportedly pregnant, was also pushed. The suddenness of the incident caused panic within the family.

Family members also alleged that during the incident, a youth ran towards them with a metal rod, intending to strike them. The family managed to escape and reached the Mahakal police station, where they filed a complaint detailing the entire incident.

Incident Occurred Just Steps from Police Station

The gravity of the incident is amplified by the fact that it occurred only about 200 meters from the Mahakal police station. This is an area where police presence is usually maintained for the safety and convenience of devotees.

This incident once again brings into question the operation of flower and prasad shops in the temple area and the conduct of the vendors.

Police Arrest One Accused

Promptly after receiving the complaint, the Mahakal police station took action and arrested the main accused, identified as Sajju alias Jayraj. The police are interrogating the accused.

Sources indicate that a juvenile associate involved in the case has also been taken into custody, and searches for other absconding accused are ongoing. The police are meticulously investigating the entire sequence of events.

During the police action, there were reports of the accused being paraded in the temple area and made to perform sit-ups while holding their ears.

Such Incidents Have Occurred Previously

In the past, numerous disputes have arisen concerning the behavior of flower and prasad vendors around the Mahakaleshwar Temple and other religious sites in Ujjain. Forcing devotees to buy from their specific shops, setting up stalls outside designated areas, charging exorbitant prices, and creating disputes when objections are raised have remained a challenge for the administration.

Local shopkeepers are expected to provide convenience and hospitality to devotees visiting this religious city. In such a scenario, if those selling religious items themselves resort to disputes and violence against devotees, it negatively impacts not only the victimized family but also the image of the entire city.

Curbing Arbitrariness in the Name of Faith is Necessary

Flowers, garlands, and prasad are an integral part of the faith of devotees. The livelihood of thousands of people is also linked to this trade, so it is not fair to blame the entire business community.

However, it is imperative to effectively curb the highhandedness and arbitrary actions of a few individuals. Clear rules, designated locations, price lists, and identification systems should be effectively implemented for everyone operating shops in the temple area.

The administration must ensure that devotees can purchase prasad according to their wishes and means, without any pressure from any shop to make a purchase.

Ujjain's identity is not solely derived from the Mahakaleshwar Temple but also from its rich religious culture, hospitality, and spiritual atmosphere. Devotees arriving from various parts of the country return with a positive image of Ujjain.

In such a situation, if they face assault, disrespect, or pressure for forced purchases near the temple, it deeply harms the city's religious reputation. A devotee who comes to Mahakal's abode with faith is, before anything else, a guest to any shopkeeper.

If the business of flowers and prasad evolves as a service to faith, Ujjain's identity will be further strengthened. However, if highhandedness is practiced in the name of that same faith, questions will arise not just for the shopkeepers but for the entire system.
