What happened: A short “20-second thyroid morning routine” is trending online as a way to boost metabolism and thyroid function.
-
Why it matters now: Many people with slow metabolism or thyroid concerns are trying unverified routines instead of medical guidance.
-
What changes for people: Simple morning movements may improve alertness and circulation but cannot replace structured thyroid care.
-
Who is affected: Individuals with thyroid issues, sluggish metabolism, or morning fatigue.
Social media users have been sharing a quick “20-second thyroid morning protocol” aimed at “switching on” the thyroid and improving metabolism. The routine includes slow shoulder rolls, deep nasal breathing, and gentle heel drops to ease stiffness and reduce early-morning stress.
What doctors say
Dr Amit Saraf, director of internal medicine at Jupiter Hospital, Thane, explained that the body’s metabolism can slow when calorie intake is too low. “When people eat far less than required, cortisol rises and the thyroid-adrenal axis slows down. This can cause fatigue, bloating, and even weight gain,” he said.
Dr Saraf added that calming mobility routines help settle the nervous system, which indirectly supports thyroid health. “They’re useful for morning fatigue, but they do not directly ‘switch on’ the thyroid,” he clarified.
Safe morning practices
-
Breathing exercises and gentle shoulder/neck stretches
-
Light mobility work to improve circulation
-
Nutritious breakfast with protein to stabilize metabolism
Dr Saraf emphasized that sustainable weight management comes from balanced eating, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep, not extreme diets or social media hacks. “When the body is properly nourished, thyroid function improves naturally, leading to long-term results,” he said.
