Can a quick workout after studying actually help you remember more? According to Dr Kunal Sood, an anesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine specialist, the answer is yes — and science backs it up.
In a recent Instagram video (October 27), Dr Sood explained that exercising within a few hours after studying can significantly improve memory retention and learning, thanks to changes in blood flow, neurochemistry, and a brain-boosting protein known as BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor).
🧠 How Post-Study Exercise Boosts Memory
Dr Sood says just 20–30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise — such as brisk walking, cycling, or jogging — can help the brain retain more information the next day. The key lies in timing and brain chemistry.
“Learning followed by moderate exercise within a few hours helps the hippocampus store memories more efficiently,” Dr Sood explains. “Exercise doesn’t just energise the body — it rewires the brain to learn better.”
BDNF, a neurotrophin that helps neurons grow, connect, and form stronger synapses, surges during physical activity. This increase strengthens the hippocampus, the brain’s core memory centre, enabling better recall and cognitive performance.

Dr Sood cites a controlled study of 72 participants, where those who exercised four hours after learning remembered significantly more after two days compared to those who exercised immediately or not at all.
Brain scans revealed stronger reactivation of memory patterns in the hippocampus — clear evidence that post-study workouts enhance memory consolidation.
Further studies in older adults have shown that a year of regular aerobic exercise can increase hippocampal volume by around 2% and raise BDNF levels, while animal research confirms that exercise promotes new neuron growth and improved learning.
⏱️ Timing Is Crucial
Dr Sood emphasises that timing matters: exercising immediately after studying isn’t as effective.
“The brain needs a few hours to stabilise early memory traces before exercise amplifies them,” he explains. “Waiting allows consolidation to begin, then exercise enhances it by boosting oxygen flow and neurochemicals like BDNF, dopamine, and noradrenaline, which strengthen neural connections.”
