European club football returned with a bang after the final international break of 2025, delivering a Saturday packed with drama, goals, and major upsets across the top leagues.

The biggest shock came in the Premier League, where Nottingham Forest stunned Liverpool 3-0, handing the Reds yet another heavy defeat this season.

Elsewhere, Chelsea secured a crucial 2-0 win over Burnley, Bournemouth drew 2-2 with West Ham, Brighton edged Brentford 2-1, Fulham beat Sunderland 1-0, and Crystal Palace defeated Wolves 2-0.

But the headline result of the day came in the late kickoff:

Newcastle 2–1 Manchester City: Barnes Brace Stuns Champions

Newcastle United produced one of the performances of the season as Harvey Barnes scored twice to hand the defending champions Manchester City a 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park.

The win marked Eddie Howe’s first-ever league victory against City in 19 attempts, and it couldn’t have been more timely—Newcastle entered the match sitting 15th, just a point above the relegation zone.

A Thrilling Encounter at St James’ Park

The hosts nearly took the lead early when Joelinton intercepted Donnarumma’s risky pass, only for Barnes to shoot straight at the keeper. At the other end, Erling Haaland — unusually off form — dragged a left-footed strike wide after being sent through by Jérémy Doku.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy through an open first half. Nick Pope denied Rayan Cherki with a strong save, while Donnarumma pulled off a spectacular one-handed stop to keep out Nick Woltemade’s header. Barnes then missed a clear chance at the half-hour mark, before Pope again thwarted Haaland from close range.

Despite chances at both ends, the first half ended goalless.

Second Half Sparks Into Life

City controlled possession after the break, with Haaland heading a Phil Foden cross straight at Pope in the 59th minute. But Newcastle struck first in the 63rd, producing their first fluid move of the half:

Joelinton → Bruno Guimarães → Barnes (twice exchanged passes) → Low right-footed finish past Donnarumma.

City responded quickly. Five minutes later, Ruben Dias smashed home the equaliser, his shot taking a deflection off Fabian Schär after Newcastle failed to clear a corner.

But parity lasted just two minutes.

Guimarães hit the crossbar with a header after Woltemade’s setup, and Barnes reacted quickest to stab home the rebound — completing his brace and restoring Newcastle’s lead.

Holding On for a Huge Win

Manchester City pushed hard through eight minutes of added time, but the Magpies stayed compact and resilient to secure all three points in a statement victory.
