Centre Ratifies 8.25% EPF Interest Rate

The Union Government has officially ratified an 8.25% interest rate for Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) deposits for the financial year 2025-26. This decision, following a proposal by the EPFO's Central Board of Trustees (CBT) in March, marks the third consecutive year subscribers will receive this rate.

This significant interest payout is expected to be credited into the accounts of over seven crore EPF subscribers as early as this month. The retirement fund body currently manages a substantial corpus of nearly ₹28 lakh crore.

EPFO 3.0: A New Era of Digital Access

Looking ahead, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is preparing for the launch of 'EPFO 3.0'. This major system update aims to expand the body's digital services and online presence dramatically, facilitating paperless withdrawal and transfer of provident fund savings.

Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed in May that testing for the new facilities has concluded, with the service expected to be rolled out soon. While no specific timeline or launch date was provided, the anticipation for enhanced digital capabilities is high.

Revolutionary Withdrawal Options: ATM and UPI

Under the proposed EPFO 3.0 rules, subscribers will gain unprecedented access to their funds. A significant portion, between 50-75% of their EPF balance, will be made available for withdrawal directly through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) or Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

To ensure fund security, at least 25% of a subscriber's EPF funds will be frozen. Eligible balances will be visible for transfer to seeded bank accounts, with transactions secured by the linked UPI PIN. Once transferred, funds can be used for online payments or cash withdrawals via bank ATMs using debit cards.

Faster Access and Enhanced Subscriber Experience

EPFO 3.0 also brings a substantial increase in the auto-settlement limit for claims, elevating it from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh. This crucial change is designed to provide members with quicker access to funds for essential needs such as housing, education, medical treatment, or marriage, often within three days.

Beyond withdrawals, the new system promises a comprehensive improvement in subscriber services. Interest for the current fiscal year will be credited immediately. Members will benefit from instant access to passbooks, online correction of information, and streamlined claim submissions.

Further innovations include the use of face authentication technology (FAT) in the UMANG app for UAN activation, and simplified first-time Aadhaar linking through the Member Portal. Subscribers can also engage with EPFO via a verified WhatsApp number for queries and updates, with 24/7 automated support in multiple languages.

What to Watch Next

The complete rollout of EPFO 3.0 is anticipated soon, following successful facility testing. Subscribers should closely monitor EPFO's official channels and website for specific launch dates and further details on how to seamlessly access these new digital services and withdrawal options.
