Elon Musk’s X unveils $1 million award and new payout rules for creators
  • What happened: X announced a new monetization model and a $1 million award for the top long form Article in the next payout window.

  • Why it matters now: The platform is positioning 2026 as the year of the creator with expanded revenue-sharing and higher earning potential.

  • What changes for people: Creator payouts will now be tied to Verified Home Timeline impressions and weighted toward long-form content.

  • Who is affected: Writers, journalists, influencers and content creators using X for income.

X, the platform owned by Elon Musk, has rolled out its most aggressive push yet toward creator monetization, introducing new payout rules and unveiling a $1 million prize for the top-performing long form Article in its upcoming payout period. The company is calling 2026 the year of the creator, signaling deeper investment in user-generated content and platform loyalty.

Bigger payout pool and new earnings formula

X said it ended 2025 with its highest creator payouts since monetization launched, and has already doubled its revenue sharing pool for 2026. According to the platform, the expanded pool is supported by the growth of X Premium subscriptions in 2025, with officials saying the revenue boost is being returned directly to creators.

The platform also announced a key shift in how creator earnings are calculated. Payouts will now be based on Verified Home Timeline impressions, meaning creators will earn from premium users who actually see their posts in their Home feed. X described the shift as a move toward rewarding content that truly resonates and content that sparks discussion.

A more detailed earnings dashboard is also being built inside Creator Studio, with a rollout expected soon.

Long-form content takes center stage

X confirmed that longer content formats are now being treated as higher-value contributions. The platform said it may weight Articles more heavily than short posts since they require more effort and can deliver more cultural impact.

To reinforce that direction, X announced that the Top Article in the next payout period will receive a $1 million reward. The company said the objective is to recognize high-impact content that shapes conversation, breaks news and moves culture.

The update publicly invited creators, writers, journalists and thought leaders to engage more actively, urging them to double down at a time when monetization opportunities are expanding.

Why it matters for creators and media

The changes signal a potentially significant shift in how creators earn online. By prioritizing verified user impressions and long-form publishing, X is positioning itself as an alternative to traditional blogging platforms, Substack-style newsletters, and video-first creator economies.

Industry analysts say the move could attract newsrooms, independent journalists, analysts, and commentators back to X if payouts become reliably competitive. However, the emphasis on verified views may narrow earnings to audiences with paid subscriptions rather than the general public.
