Elon Musk’s Wealth Could Surge Past $950 Billion as SpaceX Eyes Historic IPO

Elon Musk’s status as the world’s richest person could reach unprecedented levels if SpaceX moves ahead with a public listing next year, potentially creating the largest initial public offering in history and reshaping the global aerospace and technology landscape.

According to internal company communications reviewed by Bloomberg, SpaceX is laying the groundwork for a possible IPO in 2026, following a new insider share sale that values the privately held rocket and satellite company at around $800 billion. If the company eventually lists at a valuation of $1.5 trillion, Musk’s personal fortune could more than double from its current level.

Inside SpaceX’s Latest Valuation Jump

In a message to shareholders, SpaceX chief financial officer Bret Johnsen outlined a secondary share sale priced at $421 per share, nearly twice the $212 per share valuation set in July, when the company was valued at about $400 billion.

The latest transaction propels SpaceX well beyond the previous private-market valuation record of $500 billion, set by OpenAI in October, underscoring investor confidence in SpaceX’s long-term ambitions despite its capital-intensive operations.

Why SpaceX Wants to Go Public

According to the internal memo, the primary motivation for a future IPO would be to fund what SpaceX describes as an “insane flight rate” for its next-generation Starship rocket. The company is also exploring highly ambitious projects, including:

  • Artificial intelligence data centres in space, and

  • The establishment of a permanent base on the Moon

These initiatives would require enormous capital outlays, making public markets an attractive funding option despite Musk’s long-standing preference for keeping his companies private.

What It Means for Musk’s Fortune

Based on estimates by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk’s stake in SpaceX alone would be worth more than $625 billion if the company reaches a $1.5 trillion valuation—up from roughly $136 billion today.

When combined with his holdings in other ventures, including Tesla, the world’s most valuable carmaker, Musk’s total net worth could rise to approximately $952 billion, an increase of nearly $491 billion from current levels.

Such a figure would be without precedent, placing Musk in a financial category never before reached by an individual.

Broader Implications

A SpaceX IPO of this scale would mark a turning point for capital markets, potentially redefining how investors value frontier technologies such as reusable rockets, satellite broadband, and space-based infrastructure.

Market analysts note that while SpaceX generates revenue through launches and its Starlink satellite network, its valuation increasingly reflects expectations of future dominance in space transportation and off-world infrastructure—areas that remain largely untested at commercial scale.

What Comes Next

SpaceX has not formally announced an IPO timeline, and any public offering would depend on market conditions, regulatory approvals, and the progress of Starship development. Still, the insider sale signals growing momentum toward opening the company to public investors.

If the plan proceeds, the listing would not only be the largest IPO ever attempted, but also a defining moment for both the space industry and global wealth rankings.
