Grok AI was misused to generate sexually explicit and manipulated images, some allegedly involving minors.
India’s IT Ministry issued a formal directive asking X to act against offending content and submit a compliance report within 72 hours.
Elon Musk’s public response appeared casual, raising questions over platform accountability and AI safety.
Users, regulators, and digital rights groups are now watching how X enforces safeguards on generative AI.
Elon Musk’s social media platform X is facing fresh scrutiny after its AI chatbot Grok was widely misused to generate offensive and explicit images, triggering regulatory intervention from India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Musk’s reaction to the controversy, however, has been seen as vague and dismissive, even as concerns over AI misuse intensify.
What went wrong with Grok
Over the weekend, X users flooded timelines with AI-generated adult and altered images, many created using Grok’s image generation features. Several users openly prompted the chatbot to digitally undress people in photos, with Grok reportedly complying in multiple cases.
More troublingly, some manipulated visuals circulating on the platform appeared to depict individuals resembling minors, raising serious legal and ethical alarms.
Digital safety experts warned that the incident highlights gaps in content moderation, AI guardrails, and consent-based image generation on fast-growing generative platforms.
India steps in with formal action
Following multiple complaints, MeitY issued a directive to X, instructing the company to:
Remove offensive and illegal content
Take action against responsible users and accounts
Submit a detailed Action Taken Report within 72 hours
Officials familiar with the matter said the notice was issued under India’s IT rules, which require platforms to act swiftly against unlawful and harmful online material.
The ministry has not publicly commented on potential penalties but has previously warned platforms of consequences for non-compliance.
Musk’s response draws criticism
Elon Musk acknowledged the controversy briefly on X but offered no detailed explanation or roadmap on how Grok’s safeguards would be strengthened. His comments were widely perceived as casual and non-committal, especially given the seriousness of the allegations.
Policy analysts and child safety advocates argue that platform leaders must take direct responsibility when AI tools are exploited in ways that can cause real-world harm.
