Elon Musk Becomes World’s Wealthiest Individual After Court Revives Massive Tesla Pay Deal

Delaware Supreme Court ruling restores 2018 compensation package, pushing Musk’s net worth to unprecedented levels

Elon Musk’s personal fortune surged to an estimated $749 billion late Friday, cementing his position as the world’s wealthiest individual, after the Delaware Supreme Court reinstated a long-disputed Tesla compensation package, according to data from the Forbes Billionaires Index.

The ruling restores Musk’s 2018 Tesla stock options plan, now valued at approximately $139 billion, which had been invalidated last year by a lower Delaware court. That court had previously described the pay arrangement as excessive and improperly approved.

Supreme Court Overturns Lower Court Decision

In its judgment, the Delaware Supreme Court concluded that the 2024 ruling that voided Musk’s compensation was flawed, stating that the decision was both procedurally improper and inequitable to Tesla’s CEO. The court’s move effectively reinstates one of the most controversial—and lucrative—executive pay packages in corporate history.

When originally approved in 2018, the performance-based plan was valued at around $56 billion, contingent on Tesla meeting aggressive market capitalization and operational milestones. Since then, Tesla’s valuation growth has dramatically increased the package’s worth.

Legal experts note that the decision could have broader implications for executive compensation governance, particularly for founder-led companies where CEOs wield significant influence.

A Historic Rise in Personal Wealth

The ruling comes just days after Musk crossed another milestone. Earlier this week, he became the first individual ever to surpass $600 billion in net worth, driven in part by renewed investor optimism around his private aerospace company SpaceX, following reports that the firm is preparing for a potential public listing.

Musk’s wealth is spread across multiple ventures, including Tesla, SpaceX, and other technology-focused companies, with Tesla equity and options remaining a central pillar of his fortune.

Shareholders Back Even Bigger Pay Plan

Separately, Tesla shareholders approved a new compensation framework in November, reportedly valued at $1 trillion, making it the largest executive pay package ever sanctioned by investors. Supporters argued that the scale of the compensation reflected Musk’s role in transforming Tesla beyond an electric vehicle manufacturer into what the company describes as a future artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous technology leader.

Critics, however, continue to question whether such pay structures adequately balance shareholder oversight with executive accountability.

Wealth Gap Widens at the Top

Following Friday’s surge, Musk’s net worth now exceeds that of Google co-founder Larry Page, currently ranked as the world’s second-richest person, by nearly $500 billion, according to Forbes. The gap underscores how equity-linked compensation and founder control can produce unprecedented concentrations of personal wealth.

Broader Implications

The court’s decision is expected to reignite debates around corporate governance, executive compensation limits, and shareholder rights, particularly in high-growth technology companies. Analysts say the case may influence how future pay packages are structured—and challenged—in U.S. courts.

For now, the ruling not only reshapes Tesla’s corporate history but also propels Elon Musk into uncharted territory of global wealth, setting a benchmark unlikely to be matched anytime soon.
