Elderly Man Survives Overnight Ordeal After Fall Into Sagar Lake, Police Probe Alleged Push

A 62-year-old resident of Sagar narrowly escaped death after spending an entire winter night clinging to a concrete pillar inside Lakha Banjara Lake, following a fall from an elevated corridor late Tuesday. The incident has raised fresh questions about public safety, night-time surveillance, and access controls around key urban infrastructure.

A Night of Survival in Freezing Water

According to police, Harprasad Raikwar, a resident of the Sadar area, was standing on the elevated corridor overlooking Lakha Banjara Lake around 11.30 pm when the incident occurred. Raikwar later told investigators that an unidentified person came up behind him and pushed him into the lake.

The fall dropped him directly into the water below. With no immediate help nearby and the area largely deserted at that hour, his calls for assistance went unanswered. Struggling in the dark and cold conditions, Raikwar managed to reach and hold onto a concrete pillar supporting the corridor, clinging to it throughout the night to avoid being swept away or losing consciousness.

Rescue at Daybreak

The ordeal ended early Wednesday morning when a security guard on routine patrol noticed movement near one of the corridor pillars. Officials said the guard raised an alarm and arranged for a small boat, with the help of others nearby, to reach the spot.

Raikwar was pulled out of the water in an exhausted state and taken for medical examination. Doctors confirmed that while he was severely fatigued and cold, he had not suffered life-threatening injuries and was later discharged.

Police Investigating Allegations

Local police have registered an inquiry and are examining Raikwar’s claim that he was deliberately pushed. Officers said CCTV footage from nearby locations is being reviewed to establish whether anyone else was present on the corridor at the time and to reconstruct the sequence of events.

A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity as the investigation is ongoing, said that all possibilities—including accidental fall and criminal assault—are being examined based on evidence.

Lakha Banjara Lake and its surrounding corridors are popular public spaces, particularly during evening hours. However, the incident has highlighted gaps in late-night security, lighting, and emergency response mechanisms in public areas.
