The opening ceremony blended science and art, featuring a performance of 'O Fortuna' and a light display. Congress President Minerva Becker introduced the theme, 'Rays of Knowledge,’ inspired by Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom.
Addressing Challenges: Demand, Workload, and AI
Becker emphasized radiology's role as a clinical discipline, not just image interpretation. She highlighted the increasing demand for imaging, noting a 33% increase in Switzerland over the past decade.
This surge has led to reporting burdens and workforce shortages, making radiologists “victims of their own success.” AI was identified as both a challenge and an opportunity, offering potential workload relief through automation.
Becker urged a balanced approach to AI, addressing ethical concerns, training needs, and the risk of deskilling. She called for reframing the radiologist's role to include diagnostic quality, safety, and clinical insight.
“Our purpose is to diagnose disease, sometimes to treat it, and always to engage with patients and clinical partners,” stated Becker.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Recognition
Patrizia Cornacchione, President of the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS), emphasized the importance of collaboration between radiographers, radiologists, and allied health professionals. She highlighted interdisciplinarity as “the key to quality, innovation, and patient safety.”
The congress also celebrated excellence, awarding the European Society of Radiology (ESR) Gold Medals to Regina Beets-Tan, Roberto Maroldi, and Peter Mildenberger.
With over 149,000 members, the ESR reinforces ECR's role as a hub for education and innovation. Becker concluded with a call to focus on quality, purpose, and impact in radiology.

Underreporting of Oligometastatic Disease
Research presented at ECR 2026 indicates that oligometastatic disease (OMD) is significantly underreported in routine radiology practice. A study evaluating over 33.7 million radiology reports across the USA found OMD mentioned in only 164 reports.
Clinicians included OMD in 148 reports, while radiologists documented it in only 18. The findings suggest a disconnect between OMD's importance and its application in reporting.
Spectral CT Enhances Bowel Ischaemia Detection
A study at ECR 2026 revealed that spectral CT improves diagnostic performance for bowel ischaemia. The study reviewed 378 emergency spectral CT examinations and found that sensitivity improved from 75% with blended images to 87% with spectral reconstructions.
Specificity also increased from 72% to 86%. The results suggest that spectral CT is a valuable tool for accurate and timely diagnosis of bowel ischaemia.
