Heightened Security in Hastsal

The narrow lanes of Hastsal village in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, are unusually quiet following the lynching of Tarun Butolia, 26, during Holi.

The incident occurred after his cousin accidentally splashed water on a woman from another community. This has transformed the neighbourhood into a high-security zone.

Delhi Police and CRPF personnel are stationed at nearly every lane leading to Tarun's house in A Block, with security extending to B and C Blocks.

Restricted Movement and Surveillance

Barricades have been erected, and entry and exit are strictly regulated. On Friday, TOI witnessed police checking IDs and verifying addresses, only allowing residents into the area.

Vehicle movement is also restricted, causing inconvenience to villagers. Authorities have installed 8 to 10 CCTV cameras in Tarun's lane alone, with surveillance extending to outer roads.

A senior police officer reported the deployment of 4 to 5 companies of paramilitary forces and approximately 450 Delhi Police personnel to prevent further incidents. A request for mounted cops has also been submitted.

Navratri and Eid Festivities Subdued

The usual vibrant Navratri hymns and Eid preparations are notably absent. Residents recall previous years filled with tents, keertans, and children playing music.

One resident lamented,

"How can we celebrate when they are checking everyone's IDs and not allowing even our relatives to enter the area?"

 

Communal Harmony Claims and Concerns

Despite the heavy security presence, locals maintain that the communal fabric remains intact. Family members of the accused have fled, but local Muslim families insist they are staying.

Mohammad Hamid, 30, stated,

"We have been coexisting here for decades, and communal tension has never been an issue. The murder is a tragedy, but fear is being unnecessarily stirred up. Outsiders are trying to politicise this issue and escalate tensions."

 

Shaheeda, who lives opposite Tarun's house, noted that some families, particularly migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, have temporarily left due to the tight security.

Dispelling Rumours of Migration

Local businessmen are working to counter rumours of communal migration. Mahesh Chand, 53, who has operated a ration shop for nearly 50 years, dismissed reports of families fleeing.

He stated,

"In the last three days, several Muslims have bought wheat and rice from me as usual. No families are leaving. We need to stop fearmongering."

 

Sunita, a Hindu resident, highlighted the inclusive nature of kanjak, where young girls are fed during Navratri regardless of their religion.
