Hundreds of Suspects Identified Using Facial Recognition System

The Facial Recognition System (FRS) and CCTV footage are playing a crucial role in the investigation of the violent protest that occurred at Jantar Mantar on July 20th in New Delhi. The Delhi Police claim that the use of these technologies has led to the identification of hundreds of suspects with criminal backgrounds.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a few well-planned elements, under the guise of the protest, attempted to disrupt law and order and attack the police. According to police officials, video footage obtained from high-capacity cameras installed in and around Jantar Mantar was scanned through the Facial Recognition System. During this process, many individuals with prior criminal records were identified.

The Delhi Police stated that the situation suddenly turned violent during the protest. A group of protestors allegedly tried to break barricades, pelted stones at the police, and engaged in scuffles with security forces, resulting in injuries to several police personnel.

Police allege that some miscreants also used sharp weapons, exacerbating the situation. Following this incident, the Delhi Police have registered multiple FIRs under various sections. These FIRs include serious charges such as obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions, rioting, causing damage to public property, and causing grievous hurt to police personnel. In some cases, action has also been taken under sections related to attempted murder from the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Technical Identification and Legal Process

The Delhi Police have clarified that the mere presence of individuals identified through the Facial Recognition System will not be considered proof of a crime. Further legal action will only be taken after a meticulous examination of available video, photographic, direct evidence, and other digital proof against each suspect.

Arrest and other statutory actions will be initiated against individuals whose roles in violence or attacking the police are clearly established. The police also emphasized that protesting peacefully and democratically is the right of every citizen. However, violence, damaging public property, or attacking police personnel are serious offenses under the law, and no guilty party will be spared, with strict action assured.

Preparations for Future Security Arrangements

Meanwhile, security agencies have begun preparations to further strengthen their surveillance systems for future large-scale events and demonstrations in the capital. Emphasis is being placed on the more effective use of the Facial Recognition System, CCTV networks, and other digital surveillance tools to maintain law and order and curb any violent activity promptly.

It is important to note that the investigation into the case is still ongoing.
