Defence Minister: Talks Only on PoK, Pakistan Must End Terrorism

Defence Minister Issues Strong Message to Pakistan on Kargil Vijay Diwas

Dras | July 26, 2026: On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, speaking at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, issued a stern message to Pakistan. He declared that any future talks with Pakistan, at any level, would be exclusively focused on Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and the issue of terrorism.

The minister clarified that until Pakistan completely eliminates cross-border terrorism operating from its soil, there can be no question of normal bilateral talks from India's side. Paying homage to the martyrs, he stated that the Indian Army displayed indomitable courage, valour, and sacrifice to protect the nation's borders in the 1999 Kargil War.

'End of Terrorism is the First Condition for Peace'

Rajnath Singh emphasized that India has always supported peace and dialogue, but the foremost condition for peace is the complete eradication of terrorism. He asserted that if Pakistan genuinely desires better relations, it must cease using terrorism as a state policy. As long as cross-border terrorism continues, normal dialogue remains impossible.

The Defence Minister reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is an inalienable part of India, and there is no outstanding dispute over Kashmir. He made it clear that if any possibility of talks arises in the future, its sole subject would be Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, and only the re-unification of PoK with India is a topic that can be discussed.

Firm and Unwavering Stance

The Defence Minister described India's stance as clear, firm, and unwavering. He stated that the nation's security, sovereignty, and integrity are paramount, and the government will not compromise on these in any manner. He expressed confidence that the Indian armed forces are fully capable of facing every challenge and are always ready to defend the nation's borders.

In his address, the Defence Minister remembered the contributions of the martyrs and veterans of the Kargil War, saying that the country is safe today because of their sacrifices. He called upon the youth to embrace patriotism, discipline, and the spirit of national service.

Senior officials from all three services, families of martyrs, veterans, and a large number of civilians were present at the ceremony. The Defence Minister's statement on this Kargil Vijay Diwas is considered a significant message reflecting India's security policy and the government's clear stance towards Pakistan. He again stressed that terrorism and talks cannot go hand in hand, and India will continue to take all necessary steps to protect its national interests.
