The United States Coast Guard has discovered debris off the coast of Massachusetts, confirming it belongs to a missing air ambulance jet. The aircraft was en route from Bermuda to Boston when contact was lost.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration alerted the Coast Guard on Saturday morning about the loss of contact with the Gulfstream jet. This prompted an immediate search operation.
Search Underway for Six Onboard
Several hours after the alert, the Coast Guard announced it had located a debris field. This field has been officially confirmed as being associated with the missing aircraft. A U.S. Coast Guard cutter is continuing to search the waters overnight and into Sunday in an effort to find the six individuals who were on board the plane.
The Canadian-registered air ambulance jet was carrying four crew members and two passengers. It had departed Bermuda's LF Wade International Airport during the night for its transatlantic journey to Massachusetts. This information was provided by Skyport, the operator of Bermuda's airport.
Canadian Citizens Among Passengers
Canada's Minister of Transport, Steven MacKinnon, confirmed via a social media post that four Canadian citizens were among those on the missing flight. The focus of the ongoing search remains on locating the individuals aboard the ill-fated flight.
The incident highlights the risks associated with air ambulance services, particularly over long distances across water. The investigation into the cause of the crash will likely commence once the search and recovery operations are completed.
