Cyber Police Achieve Major Success in Fraud Case

The Cyber Crime police station in Bareilly has achieved a significant breakthrough by recovering ₹7.92 lakh from an individual who was defrauded through a suspicious file sent via WhatsApp. The victim, Umesharan Pandey, a resident of Officer Enclave in Izatnagar, had reported a total fraud of ₹9.98 lakh by cybercriminals.

Modus Operandi and Fraudulent Transaction

According to the information, Umesharan Pandey received an APK (Android Package Kit) file named 'Indian Bank Pension Card' from an unknown number on WhatsApp. After downloading this file, the fraudsters gained access to the victim's bank account and siphoned off a total of ₹9,98,000 in two installments of ₹4,98,000 each.

FIR Registered and Swift Police Action

Upon receiving a written complaint about the fraudulent incident, a case was registered at the Cyber Crime station under Section 318(4) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66D of the Information Technology Act. Under the direction of the Senior Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Police (Crime), the Cyber Crime team sprang into action. The team included Inspector Dhananjay Kumar Pandey, Inspector Siddharth Singh Tomar, and Constable Ankul Singh.

Coordination and Technical Analysis

Recognizing the gravity of the case, the police team initiated prompt action. They established immediate coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs' I4C (Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre) portal, various banks, and other relevant financial agencies. The cyber team employed technical analysis to trace the money trail of the defrauded amount.

Recovery of Funds and Public Advisory

As a result of the police's intensive investigation and swift action, a substantial sum of ₹7,92,500 out of the total defrauded amount of ₹9,98,000 has been successfully returned to the victim, Umesharan Pandey's bank account. This recovery stands as an excellent example of police promptness and effective technical coordination in cyber fraud cases.

Following this incident, the district cyber police have issued an important appeal to the general public. The police urged people not to click on any links or download files received from unknown individuals or sources, especially those related to financial information or personal data. In case of experiencing any suspicious activity or fraud, individuals should immediately call the National Cyber Helpline number 1930 or register their complaint on the official Cyber Crime website. The police emphasized that vigilance is the most effective means of preventing cybercrimes.
