Cristiano Ronaldo Shown First-Ever International Red Card, Faces World Cup 2026 Ban Risk

Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for the first time in his senior international career after elbowing Ireland defender Dara O’Shea during Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier in Dublin on Thursday night. The 40-year-old received a yellow initially, but following a VAR pitchside review, the referee upgraded it to a direct red.

As Ronaldo walked off, he was jeered by Irish fans, prompting him to clap sarcastically and give a thumbs-up gesture before exiting the field.

Ireland defeated Portugal 2–0, handing the group leaders their first major setback in the qualifiers. This was Ronaldo’s 225th match for Portugal and the first-ever red card in his international career. Overall, it is the 13th red card of his professional career, the previous one coming for Al Nassr last year.

World Cup Ban Danger

Ronaldo will miss Portugal’s next match against Armenia due to the automatic one-game suspension. If Portugal win, they qualify for the 2026 World Cup. However, FIFA’s disciplinary rules state:

• At least 2 games ban for serious foul play

• At least 3 games for violent conduct or assault (including elbowing)

Because red-card bans in FIFA competitions cannot be served in friendlies, Ronaldo risks missing Portugal's opening match of the 2026 World Cup, depending on the disciplinary panel’s final decision.
