Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka of the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) have been released by a local court in Delhi. The release came with a stringent condition: they must not engage in any activity deemed a "breach of peace" for the next twelve months.
The CJP leaders were taken to the court of the executive magistrate in Delhi Cantonment this morning, following their preventive arrests. These arrests occurred on the second day of a planned protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, concerning alleged irregularities in the voter roll cleanup exercise known as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Preventive Arrests and Release
The preventive detentions on Saturday saw the three CJP leaders taken into custody from inside an aircraft shortly after it landed in Delhi. Their release today marks a significant development in the ongoing protests related to the electoral process. The court's decision emphasizes a desire to maintain public order while acknowledging the group's right to protest, albeit with strict limitations.
Wider Protest and Detentions
Yesterday, over 3,000 protesters, including various politicians, were detained by the police as part of security measures. These detentions, which concluded later at night, aimed to prevent widespread disruption. An unprecedented security cordon was established around the national capital, particularly near Jantar Mantar in central Delhi. This led to protesters fragmenting into smaller groups across the city.
Background of the Protest
The planned protest was specifically targeted at CEC Gyanesh Kumar and the perceived flaws in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Concerns have been raised by opposition groups and activists regarding the fairness and accuracy of the voter roll updates. The CJP, known for its satirical approach to political commentary, was among those actively organizing demonstrations against these alleged irregularities.
Notable Detainees
Among the individuals detained during the widespread security operations was YouTube activist Dhruv Rathee. Mr. Rathee, a known supporter of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and a vocal critic of the current NDA government, was released late on Saturday night, similar to many other protesters.
