CJP Leaders Detained Amid Delhi Protests

The Cliff News | 10 October 2026

Leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), including its founder Abhijeet Dipke and two other prominent figures, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, have reportedly been detained by police shortly after their flight landed in Delhi. The CJP shared a video showing police officers boarding the aircraft, where Mr. Dipke was heard expressing his expectation of arrest.

However, the exact circumstances and current location of the three CJP leaders are unclear. Police have not issued a public statement explaining the reasons for their detention. This situation is unfolding amidst broader reports of numerous detentions across Delhi and other areas as authorities attempt to prevent public gatherings.

Widespread Detentions and Communication Blackout

The crackdown appears to extend beyond the CJP leadership, with widespread reports of individuals being detained across Delhi and other locations. These actions are seen as an effort by authorities to curb potential protests. Adding to the confusion, mobile internet services have been suspended in several parts of central Delhi, making it difficult to obtain a clear picture of the events.

The CJP has stated that the whereabouts of its detained leaders remain unknown, and the organization is seeking more details. The situation highlights the tense atmosphere surrounding planned demonstrations.

The Controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR)

At the core of the current protests lies a significant electoral process known as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Conducted by the Election Commission, the SIR involves a comprehensive review of voter lists, including door-to-door verification, aimed at identifying and removing deceased, duplicate, or ineligible voters. This exercise aims to ensure the accuracy of India's electoral rolls.

The SIR, which began in Bihar in June 2025, has since been rolled out across most of India. The scale of the revision is substantial, with over 130 million names, approximately 13% of the electorate, removed from draft voter lists in 30 states and federal territories. Critics express concerns that this exercise could disenfranchise eligible voters, while opposition parties have accused the government of using it as a tool to scrutinize citizenship and gain political advantage. The government and the Election Commission maintain that the SIR is solely focused on maintaining accurate voter lists.

Protests as a Test for the Modi Government

The current protests represent a significant challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. These demonstrations are part of a series of actions by opposition parties, but the CJP's call for protest is expected to draw participation from a diverse cross-section of the population, not limited to party supporters, as the CJP is not a registered political party.

These events occur just months before crucial state elections. The controversial electoral roll revisions have provided opposition parties with a potent issue to mobilize their supporters. This period will also test the CJP's influence and popularity, particularly following its previous protests in Delhi that led to a federal minister's resignation.

Government Response and Escalating Stakes

The government's response to the impending protests has further heightened the stakes. Authorities have imposed significant travel restrictions, leading to the detention of activists and opposition leaders who attempted to protest earlier in the week.

The outcome of these events remains uncertain, with the authorities' actions potentially shaping future political dynamics.

CJP Leader's Defiant Stance Before Detention

Hours before his reported detention, Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, conveyed a message of unwavering resolve. He stated that neither the prospect of jail nor charges under national security laws would deter the movement's supporters.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Mr. Dipke declared, "We will continue to fight for democracy and will ensure [Chief Election Commissioner] Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation." In a social media post, he characterized the mass detentions and the shutdown of Delhi as indicators of a leader "terrified of his own people," rather than signs of strength.

Protesters' Preparedness and Determination

Protesters arriving at the demonstration site in Jantar Mantar, Delhi, indicated a readiness for potential detention. Sabika Muzaffar, who traveled with her mother from neighboring Haryana, shared that instead of reciting prayers, they were memorizing their lawyer's contact number.

Ms. Muzaffar described her participation as her way of "defending the country and its democracy." Shortly after speaking to reporters, she was taken away by police, apparently in detention. The image of her traveling with her mother underscored the personal commitment of many participating in the demonstrations.

Authorities Respond with Unprecedented Scale

The response from authorities to the current protests is described as being of a significantly larger scale compared to previous demonstrations, such as the unauthorized protest organized by the CJP in Mumbai the previous week.

Beyond a heavy security presence, numerous metro stations have been closed, and public announcements have reiterated a ban on gatherings of five or more people in certain parts of Delhi. Reports also indicate reduced train services into the capital. Senior lawyers have characterized the measures as an unprecedented "shutting down" of the capital.

The police crackdown during the summer, which involved teargassing and baton charges against young protesters, remains fresh in public memory and had previously spurred larger turnout. The handling of confrontations by authorities is expected to significantly influence the course of events.
