Cheetah Numbers Surge in Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh is aiming to increase its cheetah population to 50 by the end of this year. This ambitious goal, set by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, relies heavily on successful breeding within the state's cheetah reintroduction program.
The recent births of cubs to cheetahs Gamini and Aasha mark significant progress. These births are seen as consolidation for the reintroduction program.
Gamini and Aasha: Key Breeding Females
Gamini, a South African cheetah introduced to Kuno National Park three years ago, has delivered three cubs on Wednesday. This follows Aasha, a cheetah of Namibian origin who gave birth to three earlier this month.
Aasha is considered one of the strongest breeding females at Kuno. Prime Minister Narendra Modi named this female cheetah.
Aasha has delivered two litters this year, first in January and another in February. This brings her total to eight thriving cubs.
Progress of Project Cheetah
Gamini was brought from South Africa in February 2023. Her first litter of three cubs, born in March 2024, are now sub-adults. Her total stands at six thriving offspring with her new cubs.
"With continuous monitoring in place and breeding momentum sustained, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether Kuno can translate this steady reproductive success into achieving the 50-cheetah milestone in 2026," according to an official present at the review meeting.
Cub Survival and Overall Population
Other South African females have also contributed to the population. Veera delivered one male cub in February 2025. Nirva had three cubs in April 2025.
South African mothers account for 10 thriving cubs. Namibian mothers account for 12. Total cubs born in India and thriving is 27.
The overall cheetah population in India is now 38. 35 cheetahs are in Kuno. Three are in Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary.
Since 2023, 39 cubs have been born in India. Of these, 27 are surviving.
