A government secondary school in Itarsi, Madhya Pradesh, has been found in a state of disarray, raising serious questions about student safety, sanitation, and essential facilities. An inspection of the school premises uncovered significant shortcomings, including poor drainage in toilets, inadequate drinking water arrangements, damaged flooring, and exposed tube well pipes.

Sanitation Woes and Health Hazards

The school toilets are a source of continuous foul odour due to a lack of proper drainage, creating an unhealthy environment for students. Alarmingly, the arrangement for drinking water, placed in buckets and other containers, is situated in close proximity to these unsanitary toilets, posing a significant health risk.

Unsafe Learning Environment

The flooring in classrooms and the dining area, where students study and eat their mid-day meals, is in a dilapidated condition. Broken cement surfaces with exposed sand and raw materials present a constant risk of injury and contribute to dust pollution. Furthermore, an open pit and protruding pipe from a tube well in the school premises are potential accident hazards for playing children.

Mid-Day Meal Discrepancies

While the taste of the mid-day meal is reported to be satisfactory, the distribution is not adhering to the prescribed menu or schedule. For instance, puris were served instead of parathas on a Saturday, when parathas were scheduled. Strict adherence to the menu is essential alongside food quality.
